EARLY MORNING TRAGEDY FIRST OFFICER RUNS AMOK Received October 22, 9.45 p.m. (Reuter) LONDON, Oct. 22. Details of the shooting show that it took place early in the morning. The first officer of the Melita, named Towers, wont to the captain’s cabin and shot him through the head. He then went to the cabin of the first engineer, Holiday, whom ho shot in the nose. The second engineer, Gilmour, who was among other officers' attracted by the noise, was shot twice in the lungs. Other members of the crew hurried to the scene and disarmed Towers. The condition of the wounded men is grave. The police opened an inquiry, hut as Towers is British, and the shooting occurred on a British ship, they were able to take only formal evidence. The 1 ‘Daily Mail's” Antwerp correspondent says: Towers returned after spending the evening ashore, and accused the captain and other officers of hindering his promotion. An altercation followed, ending in the shooting. David Kennedy Gilmour, one of the wounded, hails from Dunedin. He is married and lives in Glasgow.
