VICTORIA’S BUDGET
SURPLUS OF £135,000. INCOME TAX INCREASED. INTRODUCTION OF TOTALISATOR. Received 'October 22, 10.20 p.m. MELBOURNE, Oct. 22. In the Assembly, the State Treasurer delivered the Budget. The revenue for the past year was £23,991,000 and the expenditure £23,856,000, leaving a surplus of £135,000. The estimated revenue for the current year is £24,833,000 and the expenditure £24,728,000. The TreasuAr stated that as conditions rendered it imperative to raise further revenue, it was proposed to add a penny in the pound to income tax from personal exertion and twopence to taxes from property and company dividends. He expected to get £287,000 additional revenue from these Increases. He confirmed the announcement that he proposed to institute the totalisator as a means of raising revenue which would least detrimentally affect the general public.
