SEDDON SHIELD

HOW MARLBOROUGH BEAT BULLER. (Per Press Association.') BEEN HE I.M, July 25. The lirst match of the season for the Seddon Shield was played to-day between Marlborough and Buller, and was won by Marlborough, 13 to 3. in the presence of a record crowd in line weather. Buller relied entirely on the forwards, who were lighter than the opposition pack, hut extremely clever. As the game proceeded, however, the Buller hacks contributed to their side’s defeat by indiscriminate kicking upfield. with the. result that their forwards wore themselves out chasing the ball. Marlborough forwards then assumed the ascendancy, and the. magnificent Marlborough back team were able to get into action again and again. Only safe tackling by Kearns, Buller’s fullback, and the übiquitous Beard. the five-eighths, prevented Marlborough putting up a big score. As it was, Marlborough scored five tries, all in the second half, but the heavy ball was a factor in poor goalkicking, none being converted. The scorers were Connolly, Hodson. J. O'Brien. Phillips and Washington. Buller’s only score was a penalty goal by Kearns.
