THE INTER-ISLAND MATCH, (Per Press Association.) INVERCARGILL. July 24. The long spell of dry weather ex'* pcrie.ncod lately came to a close yestcr[day when wind and intense cold set in. Although the ground is on the heavy side it is otherwise in good order, and jprovided the weather gets no worse tho ; match should be played under fairly good conditions. Not much rain has 'fallen. The Rugby Union’s new grandjstand, accommodating IfiOO people, is i fully booked up. Mr. S. Deans, president of the Now Zealand Rugby Union, has arrived to see the match. AUCKLAND BEATS POVERTY BAY. GISBORNE. July 24. A crowd of three thousand saw Povicrty Bay (6) defeated by Auckland | (11). The winners gave a brilliant exposition. They were superior in back pud forward combination. The fast land heavy Auckland forwards. Batty, [Finlayson and Keen, featured the drib- [ bling rushes, while the Auckland backs, •with splendid combination attacked [vigorously, but iheir efforts were kept down largely by the solid tackling of Me Al annus.
