(Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, July 24. I The Legislative Council met at 2.30 today. | The Cook Islands Amendment Pill was introduced from the House and read a first time. The District Courts Abolition Bill 'was introduced by Sir Francis 801 l and 'read a first time, and a second time ‘pro forma, and referred to the Statutes Revision Committee. The Bill repeals the District Courts Act 1908 and abollishes District Courts, and the attached schedule effects consequential amendments to various other Acts. ; The Iron and Steel Industries Amendment Bill was read a. second time. . Replying to a question asked by the lion. Cohen as to whether the Government proposes to take steps to pass legislation so that New Zealand-born women shall not lose their British nationality upon marriage, Sir 1\ D. .Pell stated that legislation on the subIject of British nationality could only 'be initiated in the Imperial Parliament, 'which had not yet. dealt with the branch of the subject referred to. i In support of a motion advocating a 'speedier transport service between New Zealand land Great Britain Sir Thomas Mackenzie said he had had a definite statement from both the New Zealand • Shipping Company and the Shaw Snvill company that they wore prepared to I give quicker service without, requiring any subsidy, provided regular and full cargoes were assured.
