TECHNICAL COLLEGE

PARENTS’ ASSOCIATION Thu first annual meeting of the Technical Collego Parents’ Association was held on Wednesday (’veiling. Ihe president. Mr (’. J. Sharpe, submitted the report for the year in which 1 he said that the results had been very satisfactory though the membership was not yet as fully representative as could be desired. probably because many parents failed to realise that the progress of the children was stimulated and greatly encouraged by the interest shown by the parents. ' The Parents’ Association was one therefore that, had great possibilities because it acted as a community connecting link between the students, the staff, the parents and the activities of the college. The outgoing committee had taken great interest in the work, particularly the ladies who had wholeheartedly attended to any duties assigned to them. Several socials had been held to bring the par cuts together and a great deal of pleasure and benefit had been derived from them.

The committee had hoped to make a general appeal to the public, with the object of advancing the erection of the much-needed Memorial Hall but last year so many appeals had been made for deserving objects that the matter was held over until this year when the unfortunate epidemic intervened and made a further postponement desirable. It is hoped that the new committee will make this their objective and get to work at an early date. After the report was adopted Mr T. E. Newton. the Director, moved that a hearty vote of thanks be accorded to the outgoing committee and in the course of his remarks said that their work was very rnu«h appreciated and on behalf of himself and his staff he heartily welcomed the increased interest. that the Parents’ Association caused to be taken in forwarding the interests of the College. This was carried by acclamation. Air A. T. Cave moved in accordance with his notice of motion: ‘‘That the committee be increased from 9 to 15 of which at least live shall be women.’’ After some discussion during which the efficacy of small committees was strongly stressed by several speakers the motion was agreed to. Mr C. J. Sharpe, Ihc retiring president, declined re nomination us he felt that the office should be a rolling one. The following officers were then elected: President, Mr Peter Thomson; vicepresident, Mr S. J. Goodey: secretary, Mr A. T. Cavell; treasurer, Mr J. Boyd; committee, Mosdamos Grox er, Thomson, Me.Killop, Whitcombe. Boyd and Stevenson; Messrs A. B. Gilmour, (’. J. Sharpe, Lew. Bassett, J. P. Cowie, P. H. Thomson. C. J. Duggan. J. AL Allen, J. IT. Franklyn, and A. Whitcombe. It was decided that the monthly mooting should be on the first Thursday in each month. At the conclusion of the meeting refreshments were served and a very enjoyable hour or so was passed with cards and some excellent musical items.
