WANGANUI PIPE BAND
SMOKE CONCERT. The R.S.A. rooms were crowded almost to the point of discomfort on Sat- ■ urday evening, when members of the | Wanganui Highland Pipe Band held I their annual smoke concert. The evening was featured by an excellent musi cal programme, interspersed with speeches appropriate to the occasion. Among those present were the DeputyMayor (Mr. C. W. Poynter) and Air. W. A. Veitch, AI.P. A piping compe- j tition was held, Air. R. W. Haddow i acting as judge. There was a large ; number of entries, Air. 11. Sterling j winning the lirst prize—a silver mount- 1 ed skeindbu presented by Captain 11. Brown. A1.8.E., of the Calcutta Scot- ; tish. Mr. E. C. Campbell annexed sec- i i omi trophy, which was presented by: ! Pipe-major Thomson. This compe- i lition aroused general interest, and ■was undoubtedly the feature of the; i evening. Advantage was taken of the ; occasion to present Air. R. AV. Haddow, ; | a popular member of the organisation,! with a suit-case and rug. In acknowledging the compliment extended to I him, Mr. Haddow said that his associa- i ; lion with the local band would always; be one of his happiest recollections. His i I interest in the organisation was sinipjy |an expression of his delight in pipe: band music. He regretted sincerely! [that he was about to leave Wanganui, i During the evening, the following ! Hambly, W. i F. Koberlon. S. Bolton. A. Howatson, D. AlcMillan, G. A an Heck and J. G. Swan. j A very happy evening concluded with rhe singing of the. National Anthem and “Auld Lang Syne.”
