RAETIHI BOROUGH COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING. The ordinary monthly meeting of the Raetihi Borough Council was held on Thursday evening. The Mayor (Mr. W. JI. Sandford) presided. There were also present: Crs. A. W. Ashwcll, G. Anderson, W. Harris, 11. Jenkins, T. Fagg. W. G. Russell, G. Laloli and R. R. Dawson. CORRESPONDENCE. | From G. G. Burgess, ranger, re dog nuisance, stating that he had no gun ! to destroy dogs captured without collars. —Left to the foreman to see if he could provide a gun to destroy the dogs. Prom JI. Thompson, asking for a reduction in the charge for motors used in the I heat re.—Referred to the Electrical Comn ittee. 1 .From W. Watson, asking for a reduci tion in license fee for billiard room, , he having recently closed his saloon.— Cr. Ashwell asked if the council could legally remit a portion of a license fee. —Councillors were of opinion that as : no provision is being made in the byi laws that legtl opinion should le oi - ! t a incd. LOOSE METAL IN MAIN STREET 1 The Raetihi Chamber of Commerc.' wrote re the danger of loose metal in the main street and the plate glass win- . dows broken by flying stones. i • Cr. Russell said the chamber made a sweeping statement when they stated that throe windows had been broken by motors causing the stones to fly. In one instance he was certain that the cause of one window being ’ broken was not due to a passing motor. I Cr. Harris said that at present the main street was never clearer of loose stones than at present. i Councillors decided that Ihc only ‘ solution was a tar-sealed road. WAIMARINO HOSPITAL. I The Wanganui Hospital Board wrote ! stating that tenders wore being called for the erection of an isolation ward and provision to be made for four beds. ' The Mayor, at this stage, said that he had an important announcement to make and that was that on and after this date the Waimarino Hospital i would be open and free to all. He was pleased that the authorities had come ! to this decision as the people of the i district wore entitled to such privilege. Councillors present wore jubilant: at | the rows ami considered that the pcol pie of the district were only getting i their rights by the hospital being made | open to ail. TENDERS. Two tenders were received for the printing of the “Standing Orders’’ :.nd that of the “Wanganui Chronicle” was accepted. ENGINEER’S REPORT. The following report was presented by the engineer and adopted:— Electrical extensions. —During the past few weeks this work has been pushed ahead as fast, as the unsettled weather would permit. Jigway.—A successful trial run was made with the friction hoist on Saturday, June .10. Considerable trouble has been experienced with the eccentric bearing. 'This has been rectified and, generally speaking, everything is functioning satisfactorily. To date over 100 tons of material for the now powerhouse building has been successfully lowered. Powerhouse Building.—lt is not considered advisable to start on the final stage of the powerhouse footing excavations in tho Orautoha stream until there is every chance of completion with interruption. Tho work is now pushed on by double shifts. The usual maintenance work on the powerhouse plant distribution system has been carried out during the month. Several low tension and service lines have been erected to bring in new consumers.
