POLLY, PETER, AND WALLABY

The other day Richard and Gwendoline were absolutely at a loss to know how to pass the time. They were sitting under a tree feeling awfully bored, when Bichard had a happy thought and suggested gardening.

Polly and Wallaby were enjoying themselves greatly in the sitting-room. Of course, Richard had to fetch them out to show them how clever he could be in the garden. Polly, I fear, was rather scornful, but, scenting some fun, she agreed to join in.

Off to the tool shed they scampered for the gardening tools. Richard gave Gwendoline the spade to carry. Gwendoline is rather clumsy with tools, so it is not surprising to know that the first thing she did was to hit Richard on the head with it. “Well hit,” chuckled Polly.

Now Richard really thought he knew a lot about gardening, and while Gwendoline was doing good work, much to Wallaby’s detriment, I’m afraid, he lectured to Polly on the science of gardening. This gave Polly an idea.

Polly let Gwendoline into the secret. That night they crept out to where Richard had been gardening, and planted a huge prickly plant. “Richard be pleased in the morning,” said Polly, “he’ll think he’s grown it.” And then they went off to bed.

When Richard saw the plant in the morning he really thought ft had grown during the night. ..Wasn’t he proud!.. Unfortunately Gwendoline laughed so heartily that she gave the joke away. Richard has now not only given up gardening, but refuses to speak to Polly and Gwendoline- Poor Richard!
