FERRY TICKET FRAUD
(Per Press Association) WELLINGTON, Ecb. 25. The sale of certain monthly harbour ferry tickets was investigated at the Magistrate’s Court to-day, when Albert John Doran, aged 23, and Basil Gardiner Alloway, aged 18, were charged with the theft of £2B 10s as servants of the Eastbourne Ferry service. Doran was further charged with the theft of £3OO. J. F. Menzies, general manager of the Eastbourne Borough Council, said he found bogus monthly tickets were circulating, and interviewed Doran, who admitted selling them. Accused stated that he shared the proceeds of the sale with Alloway and another. Doran had done everything in his power to clear the matter up. The Government Audit Inspector gave evidence. Detective Jarrold produced a statement by Doran, in which accused said he was approached by another employee to sell tickets as an easy way to make money. Doran pleaded guilty, and was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence. Bail of £2OO was renewed. Similar evidence was given in connection with the charges against Alloway, who pleaded not guilty. He was committed to the Supreme Court for trial, bail of £2OO being renewed.
