The weather was beautifully fine when New South AVales resumed their first innings against England Kelloway (22) and Ratcliffe (35) continuing on a. good wicket. With the dismissal of Ratcliffe after twenty-five minutes’ play. New South AVales’ chances of reaching six hundred looked black, but a last wicket partnership added thirtyfour. Scott provided the only bright patch in New South Wales’ tail. He should have been caught, by Howell when his score was two. The innings lasted 451 minutes. Kilner was the most successful bowler. His most dangerous ball was a slow one which hung in the air, so that the batsman tapped it into the fieldsmen’s hands. The English fielding was not up to the usual standard. England commenced their second strike seven minutes before lunch. Sandham and Whysall opened vigorously, fifty appearing after thirty-one minutes’ play, but. with AVhysall’s departure at fifty-seven, play steadied down and the second fifty took fiftythree minutes' to compile. Sandham played sound attractive cricket and displayed good judgment in placing strokes all round the wicket. Woolley commenced slowly and had a couple of narrow escapes before reaching double figures. The attendance in the afternoon was three thousand. Woolley made the pace after tea, scoring thirty-eight in twelve minutes. Two hundred was hoisted as the result of 136 minutes’ battin, the last fifty runs coming in twenty-one minutes.
