FREIGHT WAR

SYDNEY, July 8. The freight war among inter-State steamship companies continues. It is estimated that as a result of reduction in freight rates since October last shippers between the various ports affected have saved £200,000. Another reduction of £50,000 has been secured by competitive tendering for freighting the Queensland sugar crop to the southern refineries. Reductions in freight have also led to an increase in volume of inter-State trade. A striking instance of the reduction in wool, which was formerly carried at Ils 6d for an ordinary bale, or 10s dumped. It is now quoted at 7s generally, and in some cases 6s 6d.
