ALLIANCE OF LABOUR

WILL FREEZING WORKERS WITHDRAW? OFFICIALS RETICENT. (Per Press Association). WELLINGTON, June 29. It is understood that one of the questions discussed at the annual conference of freezing workers in Wellington was the Federation’s attitude to the Alliance of Labour, to which it has been affiliated for some time. A report was circulated in Labour circles that the conf irence had reached a decision in favour of withdrawing its affiliation with the Alliance, but no confirmation of the report, could be obtained from officials of the Federation, or from the secretary of the Alliance (Mr J. Roberts). The secretary of the Freezing Workers’ Federation (Mr A. McLeod), when asked if he had any announcement to make as to the business transacted at the conference, said that there was nothing for publication. Questioned regarding rumours of secession from the Alliance, Air McLeod said that there was nothing definite to say. No public statement had been authorised by the conference. The secretary of the Alliance, when approached on the subject, said that he knew absolutely nothing of the matter. The Freezing Workers’ Federation, with about 7000 members, is one of the largest bodies attached to the Alliance. Previously the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants was the largest body, but they broke away from the Alliance as the outcome of the recent strike. If the report regarding the Freezing Workers’ Federation proves correct the Alliance will sustain another heavy blow.
