ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES
ENGINE CLEANER KILLED. (Per Press Association). TIMARU, June 26. A young man named Norman A. Gould, aged 22, died to-day after being crushed by the cowcatcher of an engine in the cleaning shed. On Friday night he was found by a fellowworkman with the cow-catcher pressing against his head. It was not known how he was caught by the engine. He was unconscious when found and no cry was heard from him. He died without regaining consciousness. DEATH AT FOOTBALL MATCH AUCKLAND, Juno 26. A verdict of death due to haemorrhage of the brain was returned by the Coroner, Mr McKean, S.M., at the adjourned inquest into the death of Willian Scarff, who collapsed while watching a football match in Victoria Park on Saturday. James Ball stated that he had not particularly noticed Scarff during the game, which was a particularly clean one. No complaints were made and there were no stoppages on account of any mishap. The Coroner said that it was evident that the deceased received during play a blow which was responsible for the haemorrhage, although he might not have noticed it at the time.
No signs of any external injury were revealed at the post-mortem examination.
