BREACH OF AWARD.

U.S.S. COMPANY FINED. (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, June 10. At the Magistrate’s Court to-day, the Labour Department claimed a £io penalty from the U.S.S. Coy. for an alleged breach of the Seamen’s Award in connection with the carriage of logs from Grafton to New Zealand. It was stated that a portion of the deck cargo was stowed higher than the rail of the ship, and did not have an even surface to walk on. For the defence, it was urged that the logs were urgently required by the Southland Power Board, and it was only to complete the order that the captain had been persuaded to take them. The Kittawa was licensed to carry 99 tons on deck. On this occasion she had only 67 tons. The Magistrate held that a breach had been committed, but thought a nominal penalty sufficient. The company was fined £2.
