WANGANUI BOROUGH COUNCIL
The Borough Council met last evening. Present: the Mayor, Mr. Hope Gibbons, and Councillors Halligan, Green, Sharpe,. Reardon, Gohns, Spriggens, Jensen Arnold, Pearce, Beadle, Rogers, * Poynter. Burnett, Brown, Carlyle, Richardson, Luxford. The following reports were adopted:— Purchase of bitumen.—The committee recommends that the council authorise the calling of tenders for the supply of 200 tons of bitumen. Flooding Victoria Avenue. We recommend that, the engineer’s proposal to provide a relief sewer, 21 inch diameter, from the manhole opposite Pursers’ in Victoria Avenue, to Guyton Street, be approved. The cost of such work is estimated at £470. RESERVES COMMITTEE. Hockey Association’s .application for the council to cut ana roll Gonville Park, and to provide a dressing shed—The committe recommends that the engineer be asked to report On the advisability of removing the fire reel shed in Carlton Avenue, to be used as a dressing shed, and the cost of such removal and erection, also to submit estimates for providing conveniences for the ground. The committee further recommends ■ hat the council offer to cut and roll the grow .d when required by the Association, on condition that it pays the wages of the men wnen employed on this work,, the association to do the necessary marking of the ground. Opera House charge to Competition Society.—The committe received a deputation from the society asking for a small reduction i n the charge for day sessions, and in view of the small returns received by the society for admission to day sessions, we recommend that the charge be one quarter, instead of one half of the night rates, with the exception of Saturdays. Poppy Day funds.—The committee recommend that the council agree to subsidise pound for pound the amount collected by the Returned Soldiers’ Association on Poppy Day, for work for unemployed Returned Soldiers, and that the engineer furnish a report as to whether a suitable playing ground in Williams Park could be provided for £l5O. LIBRARY COMMITTEE Opening reading room on Sundays and public holidays. —The committee reports having gone fully into this question, and it had for guidance the practice followed in other towns throughout. New Zealand. It considers therefore that as no immediate need in respect, of these days has been urged, no action be taken by the council in the meantime, and recommends accordingly.
