HABITUAL LOAFERS
THE SUNDAY RETREAT. PREFERENCE FOR LITERATURE “Quoting from librarians’, letters, also from personal experience, I must say that it is found that a public reading room which is open on Sundays is the retreat of the habitual loafer/’ said the city librarian (Miss M. Blackett) in the course of a report to the Council last evening in regard to a suggestion that the reading room at the public library should be opened on Sundays and public holidays. Councillor Gohns said that he took strong exception to such language being used by an officer of the council. He did not think that any officer should use such language in a report. A councillor: It might be correct. Councillor C. P. Brown said he did not think there was anything offensive in it and in any ease it was true. Councillor Gohns said that working men were the cltiss of people who would use the public reading room on Sundays and holidays. Councillor Burnevt considered the section should not be published. He said that in spite of what was said other places were carrying out the system.
The Mayor said he did not think that it would do any harm. The report was adopted without the elimination of the discussed clause.
