Sir William Sim, who was recently knighted, was at one time a telegraph messenger in Wanganui. He joined the local law office of Messrs Bo ria so and Barnicoat, but later left to undertake further law studies in Dunedin. Mr P. R. Higgins, a well-known Sydney barrister, and one of the directors of the Australian Provincial Assurance Association, Ltd., is at present visiting New Zealand in company with Mrs Higgins and their young daughter.
A Reuter message from London announces that Lord Pirrie died while on a voyage from Buenos Aires to New York. Tho late Lord Pirrie was bor n in Quebec in 1847, his parents being North of Ireland people. He entered Harland and Wolff's shipbuilding and engineering establishment, Belfast, in 1862, and became a partner in 1874. At tbx time of his death he was one of thgreat shipping magnates. He Lord Mayor of Belfast in 1896-97, and held many posts of honour in Northern Ireland. He married in 1879, but does not leave an heir
