The Union Steam Ship Company of New Zealand, Limited, agents for Orient Line have received cable advice from Sydney that the Orient Company have contracted with Messrs Vickers, Limited, for another steamer of the same design as Orama and Oronsay, now building. The third new steamer is to be delivered in 18 months and these three vessels with Ormonde will provide thereafter a fast monthly service. The Orama and Oronsay are in length 630 feet, beam 75 feet, depth 47 feet. They will have twin screws and be fitted with geared turbines using oil, i instead of £oal, as fuel. Their gross tonnage will approximate 20,000 tons, which is equal in size to the largest steamers at present running to Australia. A feature in the new vessels will be the great number of single berth cabins in the saloons, for of a total accommodation for 600 passengers, about 250 will be accommodated in single-berth cabins fitted in the most up-fb-date manner. Ample provision is also being made in connection with third-class traffic as these vessels will be able to carry with every comfort up to 1250 passengers. These vessels will be fitted with the most up-to-date working appliances and space for general cargo will be considerably in excess of that in the. steamers at present running. There will be accommodation in insulated holds for close on 4000 tons of refrigerated cargo. To give an idea of the size of these vessels a comparison with some other steamers of the line will prove illuminating:—Orama, Oronsay and new steamer, gross tonnage, 20.000; length, 630 ft. ; beam, 75ft.; depth, 47 ft.
