ALLEGED SLANDER

£lOOO DAMAGES CLAIMED. VERDICT FOR DEFENDANT. (Per Press Association.) PALMERSTON N., May 8. At the Supreme Court, Ernest Ball, a tobacconist, of Foxton, claimed from John Knowles Hornblow, journalist, of Foxton, £lOOO damages for alleged slander. Plaintiff alleged that in November last defendant, in the main street of Foxton, falsely and maliciously spoke and published concerning plaintiff the following words: “You are a bookmaker, and are breaking the law every day,” such words meaning that plaintiff had committed and was committing a criminal offence. Defendant denied that he spoke and published concerning plaintiff the words complained of, or similar words, and denied also that the words complained of had the meaning alleged, or any defamatory meaning and further, if spoken by him, were true in substance and fact. The jury found for defendant. Plaintiff, under cross-examination, made admissions that he had been concerned in beting transactions, and several witnesses gave evidence as to making bets with him.
