UNEMPLOYMENT

POSITION LOCALLY It is generally noticeable that unemployment becomes more acute during the winter months than any other period of the year. Enquiries made yesterday as to the position locally elicited the information that unemployment was more prevalent than was believed. At the Labour Department it was ascertained that only two men had registered as being out of work. “Of course,” remarked the inspector, "this might not represent the true position so far as Wanganui is concerned. For everyone in search of employment does not report to me. With the approach of winter one generally expects unemployment to increase, but so far I have not found thi s the case.” The secretary of the Returned Soldiers’ Association, when approached in regard to the matter of unem ployment, said that at present he had between twenty and thirty names on his books, and four men had just enquired for positions. He explained that the association would be able to assist these men as a result of the recent Poppy Day appeal. Eighty ‘per cent, of the amount collected will be utilised for this purpose, ana it the council subsidised the amount, as they did last year, £3OO would be available.
