DEER IN NEW ZEALAND

OPEN SHOOTING SEASON ADVOCATED. (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, May 6. An open season for deer was advocated by Rotarian Press in an address to-day. Though 1000 to 2000 deer are shot every years, numbers are increasing and immense damage is being done. The fact that venison could not be sold resulted in a huge economic waste. The hides were not worthless and could bo turned to good account. Some beautiful skins had been cured. They could be used for rugs and other purposes. Rotarian Press said the time had arrived when the Government should do away with licenses in certain areas, throwing them open for deer to be shot, the meat marketed, and some use made of the skins. Mr Mclntosh Ellis, Director of Forestry, said there were 300,000 deer in New Zealand. They were increasing rapidly and doing enormous damage.
