EAST COAST MAIN TRUNfI CABINET ACCEPTS TENDER £461,056 FOR NINETEEN MILES
(Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, March 26. The Hon. J. G. Coates, Minister of Railways, states that Cabinet has approved the acceptance of the lowest tender, that of W. G. Armstrong Whitworth and Co., (46,056 19s lid), foi the construction of 19 miles of the Katikati, Aongatata, Apata and Te Puns section of the East Coast Main Trunk railway. Other tenders received F. S. Greenshields, £498,397; «T. and A. Anderson, £510,279 3s 4d; C. H. Carson, £521,020 5s 10d; E. Hunt and Co., (no schedule) £687,858. The estimate of the Public Works Department was £505,037 17s 6d. The successful tenderer, stated the Minister, is, of course, a British firm. F. 8. Greenshields is a local man, who had the tender from the British Electrical Coy., for the electrification of the Otira Tunnel. J. and A. Anderson belong to Christchurch, G. H. Carson to Australia, and E. Hunt and Co., to Whangarei. While £461,056 is a large sum for the construction of 19 miles of railway, the country is st ited to be most difficult, more difficult than anything on the Main Trunk line with the exception of the Spiral.
