WANGANUI BOROUGH COUNCIL
The Wanganui Borough Council met on Tuesday evening. Present: The Mayor (Mr Hope Gibbons), Councillors Halligan, Sharpe, Reardon, Gohns, Spriggens, Poynter, Burnett, Brown, Bichardson, Luxford. The following reports were adopted: WORKS COMMITTEE. Purnell Street Deviation.—The committee recommends consideration of this when preparing the estimates. The work is estimated to cost £llB2. Mrs Haycock’s application for a lease of site of part of signal station, Durie Hill.—The committee has no rccommendtion to make in respect to the matter. Messrs Merewether Motor Coy. ’s application for a Glasgow lease "of the area at the rear of their premises, at present held under ordinary lease from the borough.—The committee, before making any recommendtion, propose to inspect the property. Drainage Loan.—The committee has considered the terms and conditions for the proposed loan to be raised by special order to carry out the drainage work ordered to be done by the Board of Health, and recommend as follows: Amount of loan, £12,000; rate of interest not to exceed 6 per cent.; rate of sinking fund, 1 per cent.; term of loan. 20 years. Security, special rate of Id in £ on the rateable property. That the first year’s interest, and the cost of raising the loan are to be paid out of the loan.
Radium Fund. —The committee recommend that a sum be voted to this fund, but that the amount be fixed when framing the next financial year’s estimates.
Glasgow Leases.—Conditions require notice to be given by lessee of intention to apply for renewal. We recommend that a remit be sent to the next municipal conference urging that the law be amended in the direction of requiring the lessee to give notice if he does not desire a renewal, otherwise it is to be implied that he is entitled under his lease to obtain a renewal thereof.
Presentation to Ex-Mayor.—The committee recommend that a public meeting be called to consider the matter of recognising the public services of Mr T. B. Williams.
Gonville and Castlecliff Tramway Board. —The borough solicitor and town clerk report on the proceedings that should be taken for the untied borough to acquire the undertakings of the board. The committee has authorised the borough solicitor and town clerk to carry out the recommendations contained in their report to enable the United Borough to take over the Tramway Board’s undertaking in terms of the council’s arrangements under the amalgamation proposal. RESERVES AND HOUSING COMMITTEE. Wanganui Trotting Club Ground.— The committee consider that the matter is one.for the council to consider as to whether the proposal to purchase this, and other properties in other localities should be submitted to the vote of the ratepayers, together with a proposal to borrow to improve the present parks.
