MARTON NOTES.

MARTON NAVY LEAGUE. (From Our Own Correspondent.) A meeting was held in the Borough Couaeil Chambers on Monday afternoon. Present—His Worship the Mayor (Mr F. Purnell), president; Mrs Birch, Mrs F. C. Wilson, Mrs Bill, Mrs Crawford, Mrs Fitzherbert, Mrs King, Dr. Crawford and Mrs Hewitt, hon. secretary. Apologies were received from Mesdames Purnell, I. McGregor, Misses Willis and Kensington, Messrs Bill and Richardson.

Mr Purnell was welcomed by the committee, having been elected president for the ensuing year. He thanked the committee and assured them he was very pleased to be elected. The chief matter brought for consideration was the visit of country children to the Imperial Squadron and the secretary was instructed to write to the Education authorities urging the Government to give facilities to take all the children of the Marton district to visit the ships. The Marton Navy League will undertake the feeding of the children if one day excursions can be arranged. The secretary was also instructed to write to Mr Darroch, Navy League secretary, Wellington, informing him that Marton Navy League desires to entertain a detachment of fifty bluejackets if arrangements can be made for them to come to Marton for one day. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to Dr. Crawford for judging the essays competition, the first and second prizes going to Marton Junction School. MARTON MINIATURE RIFLE CLUB. The above club held the first shoot for a silver rose bowl on Monday night, with the following results;—H. Nuttall, 66, handicap 4, total 70; C. M. Gronn, 68, 2, 70; C. C. McDonald, scr., 69; K. C. Fowler, 66, 3, 69; C-. Bevan, 64, 4, 68; J. Frederick, 66, 2, 68; A. Graeie, 63, 5, 69; H. Mclver, 63, 5, 68; H. Tweedie, 63, 4, 67; P. Gronn, 60, 6, 66; S. Goebel, 63, 3, 66; C. Henderson, 62, 3, 65; M. Bevan, 63, 2, 65; R. F. Wood, 59, 3, 62; C. E. Gibbons, 55, 4, 59. GENERAL NEWS. The Pirate football team visited Turakina on Saturday afternoon and suffered defeat by II points to nil. Turakina had a light back, but showed considerable pace, the combination amongst the backs being very good, C. Chapman and J. Eru showing to advantage. Delve*, at half, was prominent for the Pirates. Mr A. Sims refereed. Mr Harold -of Marton, who was knocked down by a motor lorry recently whilst motor cycling, is making satisfactory progress. He had a very narrow escape from serious injury. Mr H. C. Fowler, of Messrs Abraham and Williams, Marton, has been appointed auctioneer for the firm, and made a very Cebut on Saturday last.
