PICNIC AND SPORTS

HARBOUR BOARD EMPLOYEES. The Wanganui Harbour Board employees held their annual picnic at Aramoho Park on Saturday. Owing to the threatening appearance of the weather in the morning, the attendance was not quite as large as on previous occasions. By arrangement with the tramway officials a special tram with two trailers conveyed the people to and from the grounds. An interesting sports programme was arranged, and the events-were keenly contested, with the following result: Men’s Championship Race.—Eric Hayhow I, E. Rohloff 2. ' Consolation Bace.—G. Hopkins 1. P McKellop 2. ’ Tug-of-War (five aside).—Winning Team: W. Powell, J. Boseoe, T. Buckley, V. Quarterman and T. P. Browne. The boat-race for the Duncan Challenge Cup (double sculls) was won by W. Powell (stroke), E. Bohloff (bowl), J. Seal (cox), who, in addition to the cup, won a medal each, donated by the berthing master. The cup was presented to the winning crew by Mr.-A. G. Bignell, chairman of the Harbour Board, who, in a happily-worded speech, gave encouragement and credit to the Board’s staff which had in no small way helped to bring the present measure of success which they have now attained-in the various harbour improvements. Mr. Bignell made special reference to the valuable assistance given to the Harbour Board by Mr. Veitch, M.P., the member f<Sr the district.

Mr. Veitch, in returning thanks for the invitation to himself and Mrs. Veitch to be present at the function, expressed great optimism in regard to the future of the Wanganui harbour, of the eity, and the district generally. The committee desire to specially thank all those who donated trophies, to the Borough Council for the use of Aramoho Park, which proved an ideal spot, to the Union Bowing Club for the use of boats, Mr. Eide for loan of tent, and to the caretaker of the park.

A junior sports programme of twelve events was carried out.
