THE SOMMERVILLE SHIELD (By “Rigger”) The Wanganui Rowing Club has challenged the Union Boating Club for the above trophy, which is for eight-oared crews to be rowed in clinker eights. Last year the Union crew defeated Wanganui eight by three lengths, but this year it is expected t 0 be a close finish. The Wanganui crew commenced training on Monday evening, and went over the two mile course, whiih will moslt probably be the distance of the race which is to be rowed over the championship course on Saturday, March 29, finishing at Calver’s corner. The Union crew is expected to be on the water this evening for the first time. Mr. R Northovcr, who i s an old member of the Wanganui Club, has the red and blacks in hand, and is already getting the punch and drive in the boat which was absent last year. The Wanganui crew is as follows:

C- Thurston (stroke), F. Boulton, T. Wright, F. Packer, K. Knight, D. Caiman. I. Murie, and F, Cass (bow). Tlte Union crew will be published to-morrow morning and is in the capable hands of “Wally” Sharpe. Last year the race created great interest as was evinced by the large crowd following the race, and at the finishing post- The public of WanITanui can expect to sec an exciting race on Saturday week.
