GONVILLE-CASTLECLIFF TRAMWAYS BOARD

THE TERMS FOR THE PROPOSED SAXE OF TRAMWAYS. The proposal of the G-onville-Cas-tleciiff Tramways Board to sell its tramway undertaking to the Wanganui Borough Council, was taken a step further yesterday afternoon, when the conditions of sale were discussed by the Board. Present: Messrs A. G. Bignell (chairman), Arnold, Webb-Jones, Pearce. Gilberd, Cresswell and Cooper. Apologies were received from Messrs Pleasants and Svenson.

The folowing proposals were carried unanimously, and will be forwarded to the Borough Council for their consideration:— That the Board offer to sell its tramway undertaking, including the Tea. Kiosk land and buildings, to the Wanganui Borough Council for the sum of £38,000, subject to any one of the following conditions: 1. That provided the Council makes no alterations in the present sections from the Wanganui Post Office to Castlecliff, or the fares over the same, the Board to contribute to any loss in the running of the tramway service over the Board’s lines by the levying and collecting of a rate of the Board’s district to any amount not exceeding £lOOO per annum for a period of five years. The cost of the running of the sendee to be based on a car mileage charge as ascertained at the end of each year. 2. That provided the Council makes no alteration in the present sections from Wanganui Post Office to Castlccliff, or the fares over the same, the Board to undertake, or arrange with the Gonville and Castlecliff Town Boards respectively, to maintain the road surface of the tramway track in the Board's district for a period of five years, and in which case no contribution to be made by way of rates by the Board. That the Council be asked to consider the Board’s application for a reduction in the present car and trailer mileage charge as from November last.

If the proposals are carried it would mean that the Borough Council would take over the Tramway Board's debentures on which interest is payable, 5 per cent.
