N’ew Zealand, too, is greatly in need of population —population of the right sort. There are, we know, people of limited vision who think to the contrary, and who look upon every new arrival as an interloper come to jump another man’s job. There is, however, no job jumping about the business. In a country larger than the United Kingdom we have to-day a population equivalent to that of a moderate-sized English city, while thousands upon thousands of good farming lands are lying idle and unprofitable. We have the natural facilities for the expansion of both primary and secondary industries. Like Canada, we, too, possess prodigiously valuable resources of hydro-electric power. Our Government is pushing ahead with the installation of the plants for turning that power to productive use, and there is nothing, save lack of adequate population to prevent the development of rich and powerful industrial centres throughout the Dominion. Nature has meant | those centres which can be reached by this abundant power supply to be workshops, beyond a doubt, and conmon sense dictates that we must encourage workers to come here to utilise our wonderful resources. The Government has initiated a progressive immigration policy, and in furtherance of that policy it is to be hoped that eare will bo taken to let the factory owners and workers in the overcrowded cities of the Motherland know what we shall Soon be able to offer them —clean, healthy «ite- for their factories, and power, provided by bounteous Nature to turn factory wheel in the United Kingdom. As agents of the future it is up to

us to rise to the level of our responsibilities, and to see to it that the development of the Dominion proceeds along sensible, certain, lines. We need immigration: cur flesh and blood in other lands need to emigrate. We have the land, we have manufacturing facilities, we have the raw materials, in fact we have everything to make a great and useful nation—except the population. That is what we most need. Let us go right after it.
