THROWS DOWN GAUNTLET TO UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT I By Telegraph.—Press Association. —Copyright. Received May 29, 10.40 a m. NEW YORK, May 28. The Ku Klux Klan again comes prominently into the news following on the passage of a law by (he New York State Legislature requiring the Klan to publish its inembers'iip and forbidding meetings of masked persons. The organisation issued a statement threatening the Governor (Alfred E. Smith) who signed the law, with political extinction, and proceed ed to hold meetings in various parts of the State. At these gatherings, which were guarded by armed men, and lighted by huge flaming crosses, thousands of new members, all masked and robed, were initiated. The Klan defies the Government to enforce the law, saying it will never publish its membership. Governor Smith states that steps will be taken to suppress violaters of the new law.
