THE BANDITS
CAPTIVES’ RESCUE NOW PROBABLE. AMERICAN EDITOR’S ERRAND Received Mav 27, 8.30 pan. WASHINGTON, May 26. The State Department’s latest advices from China satisfy the administration that conditions have improved, and that release of the captives is now probable. The prisoners are safe, and it felt that the fact that the bandits are surrounded by a strong force of troops will compel them to negotiate. Mr P. B. Powell, an American editor, has been paroled by the bandits in order to convey the terms, which are apparently the same as cabled on the 2nd inst. Mr Powell has also brought the will of Leon Friedman, another American captive, disposing of his property in the event of his death.
