A FATEFUL TUNNEL
THIRD TRAGEDY IN TEN WEEKS. (Per Pr; _“ss Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, May 19. The third fatality in Lyttelton tunnel within ten weeks occurred last night, when a woman of 4 2 (the wife of a Christchurch resident), who had escaped from Sunnyside Mental Hospital at 4.30 in the afternoon, received terrible injuries from which she died in the Christchurch Hospital. When last seen the woman was standing on the platform just as the 5.25 train from Christchurch left Heathcote station to enter the tunnel. At the inquest to-day the mental superinendent of Sunnyside gave evidence that the woman probably suicided, as she had shown suicidal tendencies. The inquest was adjourned. The woman leaves a family of seven children.
