FAILURE

RESULT OF TURKO-GREEK CONFERENCE A DANGEROUS STATION' CREATED The conference between Ismet Pasha (Turkey) and Venizelos (Greece) resulted in a failure. This promises to wreck the Lausanne Conference and renders possible another war in in the Near East. By Telegraph.—Press Association. —Copyright. Received May 18, 10.30 p.m. LAUSANNE, May 17 The meeting of Venizelos and Ismet, in an endeavour to remove the reparations deadlock, ended in failure. Venizelos afterwards said: “There is no hope of settlement unless the Turks admit the principle of reciprocity, to which we are entitled legally.” This refers to the Greek contention that if they do not oppose a neutral tribunal to fix the amount of the damage done by the Greek Army in Anatolia, the lurks should be prepared to pay co?npensation in connection with the half million Greeks driven out of Anatolia, whose upkeep is now a charge on the Greek Treasury. M. Pelle and Sir Horace Rumbold appealed to Ismet to make a compromise offer, and prevent wrecking the Conference and possibly the renewal of war in the Near East.
