A genial soul is "Tom” Twist, one. of the best known of New Zealand's sporting pressmen, who is in Wanganui for the races. One of "Tom's” varied experiences was to be a passenger in tho Howard Smith steamer Rondondo, which foundered in the Australian Bight in 1894, while bound from Adelaide to Albany with passengers for the Coolgardie rush in Western Australia. On that occasion "Tom” spent forty hours in a lifeboat with a few other lucky survivors, without food or* water, be fore being rescued. It is with regret we have to announce the death of another of Wanganui's old and highly-respected residents in the person of Mrs Mart::a Harris, who passed away yesterday at the great age of 92 years. The deceased lady, who was a native of Somersetshire, came out to New Zealand with her husband, the late Mi William Harris, in 1879, and they became pioneer settlers in the Manchester Block, near Feilding. On the death of her husband in 1887, Mrs Harris came to Wanganui, where she resided to the time of her d?ath. Despite her great age, she was in possession of all her faculties. Her death will bo regretted by a verywide circle of friends, who will extend sincere sympathy to her sou (Mr A. Harris) and daughter (Mrs R. B. Horsley, of W’anganui, and Mrs Edmeades, of Wadestown), as well as other relatives.
