M.C.C. v. NEW ZEALAND. N.Z. CAPTAIN FOR FIRST TEST. (Per Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 22. Mr. N. C. Sneddon, Auckland, has been appointed the New Zealand captain for the first test. STATEMENTS BY MACLAREN. TRIBUTE TO LAMBERT. (By Telegraph;. (Special to “Chronicle.”) CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 22. In replying to-day at a civic ryception, MacLaren said:—There are two things which have impressed u-, and which I should like to menticu. One is that you have far greater di'licul y in selecting the strongest possible side than we have in England If I may say it without offsnce, we all considered that one player, named Lambert, in the Wanganui matcn, was a very fine batsman indeed. He played two thunderlngiy good innings against us. If you ha'-e. got others like him, I can say that you will beat us, and beat us very easily. If New Zealand kept up to anything like the standard of its best players, it should win. They had been “frightfully impressed” with Lambert and with the bowling of C. Alcott in Auckland Both these men were really good players.
