BOXING NOTES.

(By “Side Step.”)

The attendance at the annua! , meeting on Tuesday night was verjl ■ disappointing, only twenty-two out t o£ one hundred and odd member! attending. This shows jr lack ot enthusiasm ‘in boxing, aWi a decided tendency to regard it from a spectacular instead of scientific point “*t

view. The old committee were returned to office, which indicates a vote of confidence in their administration A deal of discussion took place and one of the main feature! was that the association should have a paid secretary. This is a step in the right direction and the secretary should have an office in town, and be a good organiser. The meming authorised ihe necessary advertising for a secretary, but nothing has yet been is a matter of urgency.

The Rhymes Belt, held by Steve Barry, will have to be re-fought for, as Barry has gone to live in.. Wellington. ...

Charlie Cann, who is to fight Geo. Mendies in Westport on 28th, August would like a fight prior to that date. Perhaps the local association could mutch Cann with Mike Flynn, Duke Maddox, Curran, or Roy Bit' 11, say about, first week in August. The champion is in steady training and will be ready to fight at any time. Tom Souter also has Sid Cann and Teddy Stewart training for the New Zealand championships land they should be very hard to beat), at Auckland on August 7th. The South Island championships have not yet been decided, but according to reports, Otago have some good boxers down there. I notice the name of Chisual amongst the entries for the -Canterbury championships. Charlie has been in the game a long time. He fought in Wanganui at the New Zealand cham - pionships in 1914. Ern Young still continues to improve and his trainer is seeking to match him with Ted Higgs, of Wellington, who won the North Island championship. Mills, of Ellham, challeng'd j Young the night he beat Tuku it lEltham, and as that association are I bolding a tourney on 29th inst.. the ‘ pair (Will probably vnejl »n 'that : dale.

The Eltham tourney will resolve itself into a Wanganui-Taranaki contest, as iu each bout a Wanganui boy will meet a Taranaki-ite.

Paul Denisky had no difficulty lit winning from Billy Preston. In fat', he was such a' good sport that Inallowed the contest to go the ful issue. This makes Preston's fifth consecutive “loss” in New Zealand -r-still he gets lights. Tom Heeuey bad the decision given against him last week, when be met Colin Bell at Mackay. Heeney had Bell in Queer Street from the eighth round on, and the crowd went frantic at such a bad decision. Heeney should come back to Niw Zealand, as there are plenty of opportunities waiting for him—he could make a meal of any of lli« I heavies here.

Sid Godfrey is still the King Pin jin the lightweights in Aussie. H-t I put away Tommy Cello (U.S.A.) in good time, winning by the K.O. route. Godfrey is a clean, living boy, who cares for himself and is always fit. He is a nou-drluker, and non-smoker. jp Larry Jones, a tough, t-rever fea-ther-weight from California, put the K.O. on Vince Blkckburn in the 16th round., Jones ia considered an acquisition to the "feathers” in Australia.

Paul Hannah will probably be Paul Demsky's next opponent. The I meeting of the "Pauls” will be watchled for with some interest. Hant&h meets Jack Keenan in Auckland on the 25th inst. This will try Keenan out. after his long spell out of the ring. Jack always goes well in Auckland. Bob Keenan, brother to Jack, beat McCarthy at Auckland ci the night of the Pooley v. Cadman fight. This boy boxes well. Pooley's victory over Cadman makes the professional "heavies" seem a very poor class, a-s Poolcy was considered a (lone man. Cadman has to knock them to .win, ] Pooley has been matched to fight I Paul MeQuarrie at Dunedin, in about two months’ time.

Lu Fromont will probably meet Dudding at the Eltham tourney. "Jock” Thurston may also get a.match. Souter’s school will probably be represented at Eltham by Young, Corliss, Lockett. Fromont, Thurston and the Grays. There will be about a. dozen bouts or more. It is in amateur tourney. Sid Calm and Teddy Stewart will not take part at this contest, as they fight at the New Zealand championships a week later. Ggo. Thomas will be represented by several of his boys.
