DEATH OF AN EXPLORER.
Received July 13, 5.5 p.m. LONDON, July 12. Obituary.—Admiral Moresby, ex plorer.
Admiral John Moresby, explorer and author, was born in 1830, and was a son of the later Sir Fairfax Moresby. In 1873 he discovered the finest harbour in New Guinea, on which Fort Moresby now stands. He also discovered 2 5 large inhabited islands, and more than 100 smaller ones, and explored over 600 miles of previously unknown coastline. He served in the Baltic in 1 854-55, China 1861, Japan 1864, and was Senior Officer on the Bermuda Station from 1879 to 1881. He retired in 1888. His publications included “Discoveries and Surveys in New Guinea,” “A Cruise in Polynesia,” “Visits to the Pearl Shelling Stations,” and “Two Admirals.”
