AMUSEMENTS, MEETINGS, ETC.
HIS MAJESTY’S THEATRE. A programme that promises to be of more than usual interest will be screened for the first time at His Majesty’s Theatre to-night. Two powerful dramatic features, differing entirely from each other, will be shown. “The 'House of the Tolling Bell,” described as a picture quite out of the ordinary, is probably one of the best mystery stories to date. The story is absorbing and moves with increasing speed as the action reaches its climax. The plot deals with the peculiar will of an old eccentric, who left his property to the relation who would occupy an old haunted house for twelve months. Several claimants, including a young girl, a fearless young New Yorker, an unscrupulous distant relation, Jules La Rocque, make the experiment with extraordinary results. The acting is in the safe hands of May McAvoy, Bruce Gordon anl other capable players. The second feature, “A Beggar in Purple,” finds its title from the old proverb: “A being without love is but a beggar in purple.” John Hargraves is a king of finance, but all tenderness has been crushed out of his life. Betrayed by a woman, h e desnises the whole Sex, only to be brought to a new viewpoint by an unexpected happening. The picture is adapted from the novel by Andrew Soutar, and may fitly be entitled a story of "men, money and morals.” The picture has been produced on a big scale, and is claimed to be one of the most notable Pathe pictures of the year. The settings are sumptuous, and the scenes of Wail Stret and society life are convincing in their reality. A Snub Pollard comedy, “Stop Kidding,” is also on the programme, which Is advertised to finish at 10.15 p.m. His Majesty’s orchestra, under Mr H. M. Williams, will be heard in new selections. Seats may be booked without extra charge at Upton’s Music Depot.
