MARTON NOTES.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) At a committee meeting of the Marton Jockey Club on Tuesday evening the tender of Messsrs Batchelar and Mclndoe was accepted for additions to the jockeys' room and alterations to the secretary’s office at the Marton Racecourse. The addition will give locker accommodation for thirty-nine riders, also proper sanitary arrangement, and a larger room for the secretarial staff. These alterations are not part, of the extensive scheme of improvements now being carried out by the committee, but simply to provide better accommodation till the big scheme is completed. Teams are now busily engaged in making the new racecourse. The annual meeting of the club will be held on Monday. 29th May. The four retiring committeemen are Messrs J. Brice, J. McDonell, I. Jefferson and F. L. Young.

The annual general meeting of the’ Rangitikei Hunt Club wil be held in the Marton Jockey Club’s rooms on Tuesday 4th April at 2.30 p.m., when the report and balance-sheet will be ift'esented and the election of officers and selection of a date for thSi annual race meeting will also take place. It is probable that the Hulas (a senior club from Onepuhi) will enter for the Senior Shield competition of the Rangitikei Rugby Sub-union. Secretaries of clubs should bear in mind that nomination of teams close on Saturday, Bth April. The monthly meeting of the Rangitikei County Council will be held on Thursday 6th April, at 10.30 a.m. Cr. Dalrymple’s notice of motion as follows will be considered: “That the engineering expenses be opportioned to the County works in ratio to the cost of the works. An executive committee meeting of the Marton Athletic Club was held on Tuesday evening. It was decided to held the road races for a bicycle offered at half price by Messrs Blackman Bros. The first race round the Bull’s block will be held ou Saturday, April Bth, at 3 p.m. starting at 3 p.m. and finishing at Morris Street. The secretary reported a loss on- the recent Snorts meeting, and steps are being taken to make up the deficiency. The secretary of Marton Returned Soldiery’ Association is in receipt of 100 artificial poppies, made in the devasted areas of Northern France by the orphans of French soldiers who fell at the front. Mrs A. H. Bill is at the head of a committee of ladies, who will be selling these on Auzac Day. Part proceeds go to the orphan children of devastated Northern France, and part to a fund for the assistance of unemployed returned soldiers in NewZealand. MARTON RETAILERS’ ASSOCIATION. A meeting of the above Association was held on Tuesday evening, Mr H. Y. Cameron presiding. A statement in connection with the annual picnic showed a credit of £l6/8/11. A long discussion ensued as to whether Saturday should be observed. as a holiday during Easter. Mr. Mogudge moved and Mr Gregory seconded that the business places keep open until 9 p.m. on Easter Saturday. Mr Butler moved and Mr Gorrie seconded that all business places close on Saturday. The amendment was regarded as a dired negative. A vote was taken —12 being in favour of remaining open on Saturday and seven against. The meeting then decided that the half-holiday for that week be on the Monday afternoon.
