We’ll test him to-morrow.” So the next morning, when, as usual, the dog came trotting into the shop and jumped on his hind-legs and dropped a penny on the counter, the baker, as agreed with his master, gave him only a half-penny bun in exchange for the coin. Hero sniffed at it, turned it Over, and then walked out of the shop, leaving the bun behind. “That's clever!” muttered the baker. “He i-new it was small, and therefore disdains it.” But worse was to follow. Ten minutes later Hero returned, accompanied by a policeman!
