AMERICAN WOMEN’S LIBERTY UNTOUCHED. NEW YORK, March 28. The police have rescinded the “no smoking” order cabled on March 2 7th. It is announced the order was sent out by mistake. (A cablegram publshed yesterday stated: New York awoke this morning to find a new surprise awaiting it. The Board of Afderman passed, and the Mayor signed, an ordinance, of which there is no record in til* official "Handsard,” prohibiting women from smoking in publie places. Women, themselffes. can in no manner be punished it they violate the ordinance, but the proprietor or manager where she smokes is subject to a fine of five to twenty-five dollars or ten days in gaol, or fine and gaol. Both newspapers made an attempt to communicate with various aldermen, and many of them declared thev had never heard of the ordinance. Finally one aiderman admitted the authorship. He said he and bis wife had been shocked to see women smoking in restaurants. The police, upon going on duty, were all ordered to strictly enforce the ordinance.)
