CRICKET.

The Wanganui team picked to play against Nelson for the Hawke Cup, met at McCarthy’s Hotel, just prior to their leaving yesterday, to bid farewell to Mr A. J. Hyder. Mr R. P. London (chairman of the management committee), said that Wanganui was losing not only a very enthusiastic cricketer, but a splendid sport all round, and Wanganui's loss would be Wellington's gain. On behalf of the Cricket Association and cricketers in general, he wished to thank Mr Hyder for the great work that he had done, in the past as chairman of the management committee. On behalf of cricket enthusiasts he then presented Mr Hyder with a nice wallet suitably engraved, and asked him to accept the gift in the spirit in which it was given, to show their appreciation of his work and also as a mark of esteem in which he was held by all cricket enthusiasts. He wished him every success in his new employment and sincerely hoped that we should have pleasure ot playing against him in Wellington next season.

Mr Hyder in reply, thanked Mr London and the members of the Association for their kind gift and he assured them that he would always watch with pleasure the success of Wanganui cricketers. He wished them every luck in their Hawke Cup contest and sincerely trusted that they would bring this much coveted trophy back to Wanganui. After the health ot Mr Hyder, the Crioket Association, and the success ot the Hawke Cup eleven, had been honoured, the team left by the 4.10 train to commence the first part of their journey. A large crowd of enthusiasts were present at the station to bid them farewell and a successful return.

A return match will be played at Westmere on Thursday between the Returned Soldiers v. the piok of the teams playing in the district. Y.M.C.A., a bye. The juniors will play a friendly match against Feilding at Feilding at Easter, The Junior Selection Committee is requested to pick the team as soon as possible. All particulars can be procured from Mr Peter Swan, who is acting for the secretary, during his absence at Nelson.
