NAUTICAL INQUIRY.
(Ter Press Association). WELLINGTON, March 23. A nautical inquiry was held toflay concerning the stranding of the schooner Valmarie at Farewell Spit on the 16th February. Evidence was given that sand banks in the locality shifted according to the change of weather, two master mariners stating that the chart, for this reason, could not altogether be relied upon as the safety margin allowed by the master of the Valmarie was considered by witnesses to he clear. Similar observations regarding shifting sands were made at a previous, stranding. The Court reesrved its decision. A nautical inquiry is being held into a collision forty-five miles off Lyttelton heads on the 26th February, between the ferry steamer Maori and the auxiliary schooner Zita.
