CORRESPONDENCE

(To the Editor)

Sir, —The correspondent “J. McD." has none of the attributes of the race he claims to represent, viz., shrewdness and caution. I would not presume to state authoritatively that certain historical facts are open to doubt both as to circumstances or genealogy of persons. I simply gave an excerpt from the lecture on i“Dailectic Language” given by Professor Giles, of Cambridge University, before the London Burns Club. .University professors hold their position in such high repute and are most careful that any statements they make are completely proved scientifically, historically or by deduction. Professor Giles in addressing such a large club as the London Burns’ Club, would not commit himself to an unreliable statement. Il therefore accept such high authority of Profes'sor Giles to the disapproval of “J. McD.” who by his reply (shows he cannot read a letter correctly, and, like all loose correspondents, flies off about Bannockburn, which was not in the slightest degree ■ under discussion. In men’tioaiing your article of 16th on “Slang,” if “J. McD.” means professional shibboleths he had better write to Professor Giles, and he will have the pleasure of getting “one for his nob,” but I respectfully beg to remind him that professors of universities are kindness to all if properly addressed, tin aiding the enquirer. but they don’t waste their time by “J. McD.” class of correspondence.—l am, etc., ANOTHER IDOL SHATTERED.

‘‘PRESENT GIVING.” To my dear Correspondence friend, “Mai Apropos.” Just one dart Before we part! For quite M.T. Although I be. Your name is MA.—• Ha-ha! ha-ha! M. (Would you, Mr Editor, care to point out that your “effusive" correspondent was alluding to a passage in Browning's Rabbi Ben Ezra, viz: “But all the world’s coarse thumb And finger failed to plumb,” etc.).
