FOOTBALL.

PROSPECTS OF THE SEASON. With the opening of the Rugby football season close at hand there is speculation In regard to the composition of the various teams. Probably there will be fcpir teams —Kaierou, Old Boys, Marist Old Boys, and Imlay in the senior cup competition, although there is some talik of the resurrection of the Pirate senior team. It is hoped in any case that it will be case of “evens and not odds” otherwise it will mean one team standing down each Saturday. As to the composition of the teams not a great is known at present, all being on the look out for talent. Marist Old Boys will probably field a better team than last year, particularly in their rearguard which has been weak. They are hopeful of getting the services of McAuliffe and Packer. With 0. Grogan behind the scrum, T. Quirke and McAuliffe in the five-eight line, a capable centre and Packer on the wing, . Marist would have the nucleus of a set of backs well above the average. For the moment Old Bpys prospects do not appear overbright, the reason being that some of their best players live In the back country with the attendant difficulties of coming into town to play, and little or no prospects of team work for training. They are hopeful of securing R. Scott and C. F. Baddeley and Gordon McLean, who played full back for Kaierau seniors last season has thrown in his lot with Old Boys while Wright, the young Southland representative threequarter, will alto asist them. The latter comes with a big reputation. Probably most of last year’s team will be there when the time comes, but notable exceptions will be Svenson, who is still in the South Island, and J. Tilyard who has returned to Wellington.’ Kaierau have a few gaps to fill most of their last year’s backs are available, and as far as is known J. Locket! will be available. They will probably have a good forward division, with W. Ross and A. Lockett to lead them. Imlay are hopeful of getting a strong team together, and look to having the services of Sutherland, Palmer, Brown, B. Delves and Williams in the backs. As to the composition of the pack most of last year’s players should be available. INTERNATIONAL SOCCER MATCH. ENGLAND BEATS WALES. LONDON, March 13. In rhe Association football match England beat Wales by one goal to nil.
