NORTH V. SOUTH ISLAND. NORTH WINS BY FIVE WICKETS. (Per Press Awociatlon.) . CHRISTCHURCH, March 13. North Island won by five wickets, and this just about represented their margin of superiority. South never really recovered from their batting failure of the first innings, but there was certainly a redeeming feature this morning, when Alloo, Galland and Sandman played such a fine uphill game that the South were left with a sporting chance, for the North were set 182 to get, not always an easy task in a fourth innings. That they got them for the loss of only five wickets was due very largely to the very fine innings by Hiddlestone. who gave further evi;dence, if that were needed, that he has no superior in New Zealand as a consistent batsman, at any rate in big cricket. During the greater part of the North’s second innings South always had a fighting chance. The wicket wore remarkably well. The attendance of the public to-day was small and the match means a loss to the New Zeland Cricket Council of about £lOO. To-day Alloo gave a particularly sound display. It was a highly meritorious innings, for no sounder defence was shown by any player on the side. His 52 included many fine scoring shots. Sandman’s defence was as sound as Alloo’s, but his was a much brighter innings, for he scored a great deal faster than Alloo. Gatland’s also was a spirited innings. Of the Northern bowlers. Allcott’s figures suffered severely to-day, when he only got one for 46. However, his bowling on the whole gave the impression that it is doubtful if there is a better bowler in New Zealand. The North’s second innings was marked by a very sound and masterly display of batting by Hiddlestone, and it was really this knock, coming early as it did, that practically assured the North of victory. His defence was soundness itself. Sneddon batted so soundly that probably few would have been surprised if he and Hiddlestone had hit off the runs. McLeod and Garrard both batted very soundly and well, so well indeed that they looked capable of many more had they been needed. The South sorely felt the need of another good bowler to-day. Sandman bowled very well, but Hiddlestone picked out his loose balls with unerring precision and rather spoilt his figures. Dickinson was a failure, for not only was he expensive, but he never looked like getting a batsman out. Next to Carlton and Sandman, Grant was the best bowler on the side, and sent down some very good ones. Scores: — SOUTH ISLAND. First Innings 169 Second Innings.
