COST OF POWER

GONVILLE AND CASTLECLIFF. OVERTURES TO THE COUNCIL. At the Borough Council meeting the Mayor announced that the Gon-ville-Castlecliff Tramway Board wished, in order to save going to, arbitration, as required by the agreement between the two bodies, to hold a conference. The Board proposed that the chairman (Mr Bignell), Mr G. Marshall (solicitor) and Mr Bourine (clerk) should meet three representatives of the Council. Mr Williams suggested that these should be himself, Mr Treadwell (Borough solicitor) and the Town Clerk. Cr. Sigley made an emphatic protest. “I do not like the inference that is there. I will say more if you like.’’ he said. Cr. Harris said the charge to be made was based cn the cost of the current to the Borough, and the Council could not go beyond that. The Board wanted to bargain and bluff and get the power at less than it was costing Wanganui ratepayers, who had burdens enough to hear. Cr. Maunder said he took it that the committee would report to the Council. Cr. Sigley said that for the Council to retreat from its position was not a fair thing. Cr. Gohn said the position was that tile Gonville—Castlecliff Tramway Board was now approaching the Council with the view to avoiding arbitration. The Mayor’s motion was carried, with the addition that the committee should report to the Council.
