NORTHERN “REPS.” GO SOUTH TO-DAY.

PREPARING FOR THE FIRST TEST. (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, August 4. The North Island members of the New Zealand team for the first test match at Dunedin on Saturday week, together with the extra players chosen, will assemble in Wellington to-morrow to proceed south by tomorrow night’s steamer. The whole team are to be in Dunedin on Saturday next to go into training. Mr. A. McDonald is associated with Mr. W. J. Stead as coach for the team. Mr. D. M. Stuart will be manager. CANTERBURY. V. WANGANRJ'L SATURDAY’S BIG MATCH. The Canterbury touring team, x which gained such a decisive vic- j tory over Taranaki on Wednesday, 1 arrived in town yesterday trona Hawera. The visitors were met at the station by Mr. Geoff Pownall (president of the local Union) and several other officials, and conducted to th* New Criterion Hotel, where they will be quartered during their stay in Wanganui. By defeating the Springboks and Taranaki, Canterbury have estab- j lished the right to be consideredl probably the strongest team in the) Dominion, and this will invest the match against Wanganui on Saturday with added interest. In both matches against Taranaki the Wan. ganui tem were unlucky, and as the side to play Canterbury is stronger than that which was recently beaten by Taranaki, there is every prospect of a splendidly contested game being witnessed on Saturday. If the local forwards can hold their own, the backs should make a fine showing. Indications point to it being a most interesting game. Owing to the continuance of the wat weather, it has been decided to play the match on the Rec. in preference to Cook’s Gardens, as \ originally arranged. Special saat-i ing accommodation is being provided on the Rec., and it is anticipated : that the big crowd which is sure to assemble will be able to witneps the match in comfort. JUNIOR GRADE. Kaierau v. College at 2 pm. Mr. Hiroti. THIRDS. Aramoho v. Kaierau. Curtainraiser to Canterbury-Wanganui match. 1.30 p.m. Mr. J. B. Rowe. LEAGUE FOOTBALL. (To the Editor). Sir, —As an old player, just a word of warning to any Rugby boys ! who may be approached by indivld- ’ uals trying to get them to take on j the professional game. League is a professional game and all the talk in the world will not alter that. Just ask these gentry when tney intend refunding the expenses of those they induced to go to Auckland and pay their own expenses last time they tried League here. These men weer told at the time they were to have all their expenses paid and a share of the profits. Did they get them? I can’t imagine our Rugby reps, paying their own expenses.— Yours, etc., RUGBY.
