FIRE-LIGHTING ECONOMY.

A considerable saving in wood is effected in fire-laying by the use of newspaper balls. The best way to make these is as follows: Take half a sheet of newspaper, roll it “on the cross,” then twist it tight and tie it into a knot, pressing the ends into the knot and working the latter into a ball, or leaving the ends free. These paper balls may partly eleven entirely take the place of firewood. One of the secrets of getting a fire to burn quickly and brightly, is to provide a good draught, by laying small, nobbly bits of coal on to the firewood, nicely laid in crossbars; or by raising the newly-lit fire with a poker until a good laze is obtained. Another secret of success is to make sure that the wood used in fire-lay-ing is perfectly dry.
