Taihape, tne progressive capital of the northern portion of Rangltikei County, Is a centre of bristling activity to-day, on the occasion of the Rangitikel Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s tenth annual Winter Show. The sturdy settlers from round about, many of w’honi have helped towards the bravo snowing which is pelng made of the district’s capabilities, have come m with their families, and are dividing their attention oetween the Winter Show in the Town Hall and the Sheep Dog Trials on the Recreation Ground. Despite tho fact that the Poultry Show has been eliminated this year, the Winter Show Is, It anything, ahead of any exhibition which has yet been made here. Particularly does this apply to the field roots and garden produce sections. The giant mangel wurzels, Swede turnips, and silver beet on exhibition are unmistakeable proof of the fertility of the soil in this favoured corner of the Dominion. The enthusiastic secretary, Mr A. M. Ryan, well supported by a willing band ot stewards, have the arrangements in excellent train. The displays of garden produce, fruit ana home Industries prove abundantly that Taihape homes must be pleasant places to live in, while the art and industrial section disclose that the good housewives, while industrious, yet find time to cultivate the graces that go so far to beautify and adorn Home life. An interesting object lesson on the splendid system of education obtaining in New Zealand was afforded by the work done In the schools’ section. The cooiciu, done by the girls was evidence that the instruction in domestic economy was along sound and right lines. The essays, drawing, mapping and brushwork were alike good, pupils from schools stretching from Ohakune to Palmerston North competing in the various competitions. Durie Hill School pupils were successful in carrying off some of the prizes. On the whole, the tenth annual Winter Show is an instructive and helpful exposition, which should not only serve as an excellent advertisement for the town and district, but benefit all who view it.
